comrade; camera. Three centuries and more ago Spanish soldiers resided in separate chambers called camaradas, two or more to the room, instead of barracks. Soldiers who shared the same chambers came to call themselves comaradas, which in time became the English word comrade. The Italian word cam- era is similar to the Spanish camarado, and also means “room.” From the camera oscura (“dark room”) used for projecting and viewing outdoor scenes through a lens or pinhole, we get our word camera. |
