concrete boat; marble boat. According to legend, the relics of the Apostle St. James were miraculously transported from Jerusalem in a “marble boat” with sails—and a huge stone used to be exhibited as this boat at Padron on the Spanish coast. It is definitely no legend that “concrete boats” were built in the U.S. during World War I to help conserve steel. These reinforced concrete ships performed well but weren’t kept in operation af- ter the war. |
