词汇 conchie
词源
conchie; CO. Conchie was sometimes disparaging slang for a conscientious objector during World War I and World War II, that is, someone exempted from military service on grounds of conscience. Conchie (KON-chee) is first recorded in 1917 in En- gland and a year later in the U.S.; conscientious objector had been used in the late 19th century to mean someone who ob- jected to vaccination. CO was another term for a conscientious objector, as were conchy and conshie. In Australia, conchie means a person who is too conscientious and works too hard, often trying to impress someone. In Britain those who wanted CO status had to be questioned by a government panel. Ac- cording to Robert Graves in Goodbye to All That, when the author Lytton Strachey was asked what he’d do if he saw a Ger- man soldier trying to ravish his sister, he replied, “I would try to get between them.”
