conclave. This word, now applied to any secret or confiden- tial meeting, once meant only the assembly of cardinals that meets to elect the pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Con- clave itself comes from the Latin conclave (con, with, and clave, key), “a room or place with key” and was initially used to de- scribe the small cells or apartments of the Vatican given to each member of the College of Cardinals at the assembly, which was established by Pope Gregory X in 1274. |
