词汇 boojum tree
词源
boojum tree. Perhaps the only tree to be named after a fic- tional character. This deciduous tree (Idria columnaris) of Baja, California, with a thick, tapering trunk and spiny branches, has since about 1960 been popularly named for the imaginary character the boojum in Lewis Carroll’s nonsense poem The Hunting of the Snark (1867). In fact, Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) insisted that his poem “sprang from one line of verse—one solitary line—‘For the Snark was a Boojum, you see,’ ” which came to him while he was out walking one day. Asked what the poem meant, he replied, “I have but one an- swer, ‘I don’t know.’ ” See chortle; sequoia.
