词汇 | houseleek |
词源 | houseleek. An attractive succulent that often grows on the roofs of thatched cottages in England, the houseleek or “roof houseleek” (Sempervivum tectorum) was originally planted on house roofs because it was believed to ward off lightning, fever, and evil spirits. The emperor Charlemagne decreed that each of his subjects must grow the houseleek on his roof. Wrote Tho- mas Hill in the early-16th-century Natural and Artificial Con- clusions: “If the houseleek or syngreen do grow on the housetop, the same house is never stricken with lightning . . .” The plant is also called “Jove’s beard” and “Juniper’s beard.” It is no relation to the onionlike vegetable called a leek. |
