词汇 going postal
词源
going postal. Patterned on going crazy, going bonkers, and, especially, going ballistic, this expression has been around since the late 1980s. It first meant the sudden explosive attack by a postal worker on coworkers in the workplace. According to Anne H. Soukhanov in Word Watch (1995): “This expression takes its cues from Patrick Henry Sherrill’s attack on an Ed- mund, Oklahoma, post office in 1986, in which fourteen people were killed and six wounded, followed in subsequent years by several other such incidents.” Today the expression is used much more loosely to mean “totally stressed out,” “almost los- ing it,” etc.
