| 词源 | Old Philadelphia Lady. One of the most famous letters to an editor in newspaper history is one an anonymous “Old Phila- delphia Lady” sent James Gordon Bennett, the publisher and editor of the New York Herald: “I am anxious to find out the way to figure the temperature from centigrade to Fahrenheit and vice versa. In other words, I want to know, whenever I see the temperature designated on the centigrade thermometer, how to find out what it would be on Fahrenheit’s thermometer— Old Philadelphia Lady, Paris, December 24, 1899.” The letter became famous after it was unintentionally reprinted the next day, a mishap that made the famously eccentric Bennett so mad that he published it every day until he died in 1918. Read- ers cancelled their subscriptions, even threatened to kill the old woman, but Bennett nevertheless ran her letter for the next 18 years and five months, for a total of 6,718 continuous days in all.
