Old Public Functionary; OPF; Old Pennsylvania Fossil; Harriet Lane. James Buchanan (1791–1868), a compromise can- didate and a minority president, called himself Old Public Functionary or OPF. Buchanan served one term, from 1857 to 1861. Among the most indecisive and ineffective of presidents, he was called Old Pennsylvania Fossil by many. Another of his nicknames was Ten-Cent Jimmy, because he supported low tar- iffs. The only bachelor to serve a full term as president, his niece Harriet Lane served as his hostess. This golden-haired girl was immensely popular compared to her uncle—a gown, a racehorse, a flower, and even the warship Harriet Lane were named after her, and the song “Listen to the Mockingbird” dedicated to her. One wit observed, “There is no power behind the throne, either.”
