Old Lady of Threadneedle Street. The Bank of England, lo- cated on Threadneedle Street in London, is called the Old Lady because the institution has traditionally been fiscally conserva- tive or overly cautious. The bank was first called the Old Lady of Threadneedle Street in the late 18th century. The street was originally known as “Three Needle Street,” this name recorded in 1598. |
