词汇 | hands up |
词源 | hands up! Nathaniel Hawthorne’s son, Julian, seems to be the first writer to record the expression hands up!, in an 1887 novel, but he meant the words for schoolchildren, not outlaws: “Hands up—every soul of you. Hands up, those who have the right an- swer!” There appears to be no certainty as to who first used the words to mean “a robber’s, policeman’s, etc., order to preclude resistance,” as the OED states. The OED dates the first use of hands-upper (“one who surrenders with his hands held up”) to 1902, giving a number of references. However, the surrender order itself isn’t dealt with. Because the Americanism holdup, “robbery,” is recorded in 1878, someone must have said “hold your hands up” or “hands up” before then. |
