Big Bang theory. The cosmological theory holding that the universe originated with the explosion of a single compact mass, blasting matter in every direction. The term was invented in 1950 by astrophysicist Fred Hoyle (1918–2001), who used it derisively in defending his steady state theory (1938). “This big bang theory seemed to be unsatisfactory,” he wrote, but over the years the big bang theory has become generally more ac- cepted than his own. |
