Mercator’s projection. Gerardus Mercator, his name being the Latinized form of Gerhard Kremer, devised Mercator’s pro- jection in 1568. His famous cylindrical chart gave all meridians as straight lines at right angles to the parallels of latitude, and is the basis of mapmaking today. Mercator, born in 1512, was a Flemish geographer and mathematician whose accurate maps and globes revolutionized mapmaking and freed geographers from “the tyranny of Ptolemy,” the earlier astronomer and ge- ographer, who had underestimated the earth’s size. |
