Memphis. The southern city, famous for Beale Street, the W. C. Handy museum, and Elvis Presley’s Graceland home, was founded by Andrew Jackson in 1819. It was named after its sto- ried sister city, which was the capital of the Old Kingdom of an- cient Egypt from ca. 3400 to ca. 2445 b.c., at the apex of the Nile delta 12 miles above Cairo. |
