Megillah. One of the Hebrew scrolls in synagogues read on certain Jewish holy days. They include the Song of Solomon, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and the Book of Esther, which is read in synagogue during the festival of Purim. Since a Megillah is long and detailed, the whole megillah became a Yid- dish phrase, now used by many Gentiles, meaning a long- winded story or a long, tedious explanation. A big megillah means the same. Megillah itself derives from Hebrew for “scroll.” |
