词汇 men seldom make passes / at girls who wear glasses
词源
Men seldom make passes / at girls who wear glasses. Au- thor Dorothy Parker’s celebrated couplet was originally pub- lished in her friend Franklin Pierce Adams’s “The Conning Tower” column under the title “News Item.” One of the great wits of all time, Parker had the sharpest tongue of anyone at New York’s celebrated Algonquin Round Table, a luncheon group that met at the Algonquin Hotel in the 1920s and includ- ed Adams, Robert Benchley, Heywood Broun, George S. Kaufman, Alexander Woollcott, and others from time to time. Later, an anonymous wit qualified Parker’s famous couplet, writing: “Whether men will make passes at girls who wear glasses / Depends quite a bit on the shape of the chassis.”
