词汇 | megaphone |
词源 | megaphone; loudspeaker; bullhorn; loudhailer; bitchbox. Megaphone, the word first recorded in 1878, refers to a cone- shaped device that greatly magnifies sound, is used outside, and is not electronic; while loudspeaker (invented about 1880) refers to an electronic device that magnifies sound in a room or a hall, etc.; and bullhorn, first recorded in 1950, refers to a high-powered, cone-shaped, electrical loudspeaker for out- door use. In Britain and Australia each of these devices would be called a “loudhailer,” a term unknown in the U.S. Since World War II bitchbox has been U.S. slang for the loudspeaker of a public address system in a military compound, over which authorities always seem to be bitching about something to the troops. |
