small potatoes. A favorite expression of the character based on big-time crook Meyer Lansky in The Godfather (1970), small potatoes means “something or someone trivial or insignificant.” The term is an Americanism dating back to about 1831, when it was first recorded, and is frequently used in the form small potatoes and few in a hill, a favorite Davy Crockett expression. Small potatoes are often called new potatoes and salad pota- toes in the U.S.. They are usually considered tastier than larger specimens. |
