elephant bird. You won’t find elephant bird in any dictionary, but there is such a term. Elephant bird refers to what Afghans call a turkey, because of its great size. Afghan Zahis Shah told the New York Times (11/25/01): “This is my bird. When I run out of money I take one and come to the city and sell it at the bazaar. I heard last night . . . that in America there is a harvest festival and they eat this bird. We call it elephant bird.” See turkey. |
