TV dinner. Few people realize that the ubiquitous frozen TV dinner is a trademark name of the C. A. Swanson Company. It was coined in 1953, during the early days of television, when people first began to sit around their TV sets and eat prepared dinners that were easily heated in the oven. It should be added that Gerry Thomas (1922–2005), a Swanson salesman, invented the TV dinner, whose sales now total $30 billion a year. The first dinner was sold in 1954 and consisted of turkey, peas, sweet potatoes, and cornbread and was served in a compart- mentalized tray similar to an army mess kit. See television.
