fruit names. In a delightful New York Times Magazine piece (May 30, 2004) Strawberry Saroyan (William Saroyan’s grand- daughter) tells of four people, including herself, named after fruits: an Apple, a Plum, and a Raspberry. To expand her unique orchard a bit, I would add Tangerine (also the title of a pop song), Cherry, Peaches, and three famous characters of Ameri- can literature: Popeye’s Olive, Herman Melville’s Pip (short for pippin, a delicious apple), and Mark Twain’s immortal Huckle- berry Finn. Drop me a line if you know of any others. |
