Quantrill. Any fabled gunfighter or guerrilla; after William Clark Quantrill (1837–65), who formed a pro-Confederate guerrilla band during the Civil War, more to serve his penchant for cruel bush whacking, bloodletting, and looting than out of any sympathy for the Confederacy. In 1863 he led 448 men into Lawrence, Kansas, where they slaughtered 142 Jayhawkers, or pro-Union, citizens. Quantrill died two years later after being shot in the back while trying to escape from a detachment of Union soldiers. |
