词汇 | steamboat |
词源 | steamboat. Steamboat is an Americanism dating back to at least 1785, when John Fitch invented the first workable one. Fitch was not able to secure the financial aid necessary to pro- mote his invention after his fourth ship was destroyed, and he died a broken man, leaving a request that he be buried on the banks of the Ohio River so that he might rest “where the song of the boatman would enliven the stillness of my resting place and the music of the steam engine soothe my spirit.” His dream became a reality in 1807, nine years after he died, when Robert Fulton’s steamboat Clermont, which had been called “Fulton’s Folly,” proved a great success. |
