词汇 | steal a march on someone |
词源 | steal a march on someone. Here the march is the distance armed troops can cover in a day. In medieval times enemies could easily figure this distance and, by marching at night, be waiting to surprise their opponents when they arrived at their destination. This was known as stealing a march on someone and came to mean “to anticipate someone’s moves and thus gain an advantage over him.” |
