词汇 | assassin |
词源 | assassin. Named after the 11th-century Muslim order of Assassins, its name coming from the Arabic hashshasin “eat- ers of hashish or hemp,” which apparently gave them courage for their ruthless murders. The first grandmaster of the order, its absolute ruler, was known in Europe as the Old Man of the Mountain. According to one writer, the lowest devotees were required to disregard their own safety—“martyrdom was not avoided but sought.” The term assassin came into English and today is used to mean murderer, particularly one who kills for political motives. See old man of the mountain; thug. |
