词汇 | appalachia |
词源 | Appalachia. The Appalachian Indian tribe gave its name to this mountainous region in the southeastern U.S., though the naming was a mistake. As Roderick Peattie put it in The Great Smokies and Blue Ridge (1943): “[The Spanish explorer] De Soto left no memorial or trace, except for the name Appala- chian itself (from the Appalachi tribe of Muskhogeans on the Gulf Coast), misapplied by him to the fair mountains he tra- versed so long ago.” It is interesting to note that Washington Ir- ving once suggested (in the Knickerbocker Magazine, August 1839) that the name United States of Appalachia be substituted for the United States of America. |
