Apollo; Apollo 11. Today an Apollo almost always means a very handsome man, but among the ancient Greeks and Ro- mans he was a much-worshipped god, son of Zeus and Leto, widely associated with music, poetry, and other arts. He was even worshiped as sminthos, the “Mousekiller” for his protec- tion of farmers against mice. Apollo for a handsome man comes specifically from the Apollo Belvedere, an ancient sculp- ture of a handsome youth unearthed in Italy in 1485 that is now in the Vatican Museum. The American space program Apollo 11 landed the first men on the moon in 1969. |
