词汇 | apartheid |
词源 | apartheid. Although racial segregation is no longer the law in South Africa, this word for official racial segregation is still applied to any such official policy anywhere and even segrega- tion in general. The word seems to have first been used in En- glish in a 1947 South African newspaper article. Apartheid is from Afrikaans, the language of Dutch settlers in South Africa. It is composed of the Dutch apart, “separate,” and heid, equiva- lent to the English suffix hood, literally meaning “separateness” but actually being far more insidious in both meaning and practice. |
