词汇 | aphrodisiac |
词源 | aphrodisiac. Anything, including food, drink, drugs, art, and words, that arouses or enhances sexual desire. The word comes from the name of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty, who sprang beauteous from the foam (áphros) of the sea that gathered around the severed penis of her father, Uranus, after his son Cronos dethroned and mutilated him. The Cytherean, as she is also called, is probably a goddess of Oriental origin; she bears a strong resemblance to the Asian Astarte. The Romans identified her with Venus. “Goddess born of the blue foam,” mother of Eros and Priapus, Aphrodite had as lovers in various legends not only Adonis but also Dionysus, Anchises, and Paris. She was worshipped in two separate forms: as Aphrodite Urania, “the goddess of higher, purer love,” and as Aphrodite Pandernos, “the goddess of sensual lust”—a distinc- tion that, significantly, wasn’t made until later more repressed times. Fathered by Dionysus or Bacchus, god of wine, Aphro- dite’s son priapus is identified with phallic worship. The Ces- tus, her legendary girdle, is said to have endowed all its wearers with irresistible powers of love. |
