fanfare; fanfaron. A fanfare, an “ostentatious display or flourish,” was originally a flourish or short air played by trum- pets when important people, or self-important people, arrived. In this sense it derived from the Spanish fanfarria, meaning “bluster, haughtiness,” haughty people often demanding that heralding trumpets be played when they came upon the scene. Another word deriving from the Spanish fanfarria is fanfaron, for a braggart. |
