词汇 | doctor eliot-s five-foot shelf |
词源 | Doctor Eliot’s Five-Foot Shelf. A light-hearted name for the Harvard Classics, which are 50 volumes of the world’s greatest literature, philosophy, poetry, science, and drama selected by Charles William Eliot (1834–1926), president of Harvard from 1869 to 1911. The idea for the library came from two Collier’s magazine editors and Harvard professor William Allan Neilson assisted Eliot. It was said that reading only 15 minutes a day of the Five-Foot Shelf would eventually earn the reader a liberal education. |
