DNA. The DNA we have been hearing so much about as evi- dence of guilt or innocence in murder trials is (very roughly) a nucleic acid that carries the genetic information in the cell. Its scientific name is the longest word in the English language. Ac- cording to the Guinness Book of World Records the longest of all words is “the systematic name for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which contains 16,569 nucleotide residues and is thus 207,000 letters long.” |
