Doberman pinscher. Louis Dobermann, a German breeder, first bred these dogs for strength, loyalty, intelligence, and fe- rocity. They are short-haired, fearless dogs generally black or rust in color and proud of bearing. The male stands 24 to 27 inches, weighing 60 to 75 pounds. Dobermans are used exten- sively by the military and as guards for department stores and other commercial establishments. Their ferocity is fabled, and there are tales of them holding onto a gunman’s arm after being shot to death. See rottweiler. |
