Disneyan. Among Walt Disney’s 39 awards from the Acade- my of Motion Picture Sciences, and his more than 800 awards and decorations for his work from other sources, there is one that honors him “for creating a new art form in which good was spread throughout the world.” It is on this creation that his fame rests secure. Walter Elias Disney (1901–66) did not invent the animated cartoon but brought it to perfection and created characters that have become a permanent part of American folklore (see mickey mouse). His many full-length animated motion pictures (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bambi, Fantasia, Dumbo, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Robin Hood, Peter Pan, and so on) set a standard for all others. Disney’s Mickey Mouse film Steamboat Willie was the first ani- mated sound cartoon and he is credited with the invention of the storyboard and other innovative cartoon techniques. On another less creative level, the artist has been invidiously called “the Henry Ford of the entertainment industry” for his Disney- land in California and the Disney World in Florida. Like Henry Ford—and Disney films were his favorites—Disney’s was a typ- ical American success story: humble beginnings (although his family traces its origins to England’s noble D’Isney clan), hard work, and hardships of every description. Even the success marred by crass commercialism in later years is not unfamiliar. Yet the genius triumphs in the end. Disney’s characters remain, in the words of British artist David Low, “the most significant figures in graphic art since Leonardo.”
