dithyramb. A Greek choral lyric said to have been invented, in literary form, by the semilegendary poet Arion. The poet made a fortune in Italy and was returning to Corinth when he was robbed by sailors and thrown overboard. But his assailants allowed him to sing a song before throwing him to his death, and a dolphin, charmed by the song, carried him safely to land. |
