dismal. Two days of every month on medieval calendars were designated “evil days,” dies mali in Latin. These days were thought to be evil and unlucky because Egyptian astronomers had pronounced them so centuries before. We have since learned not to place much stock in Egyptian astronomers or medieval calendars, but dies mali is still with us in the form of dismal, which has come to mean gloomy, dreary, dull, or lack- ing in merit. |
