The American Water Supply Company’s vending machines sold a drink of water in a disposable paper cup for one cent beginning in 1906, the cup possibly called a Dixie cup because it was so reliable—like the old 10-dollar bills issued in Louisiana prior to the Civil War (see dixie). In years to come the Dixie cup was frequently applied to ice cream sold in a small cup as opposed to Popsicles, or ice-cream pops, and cones.
