Yooper; Yoopanese. Someone who lives on the Upper Pen- insula of Michigan. The name was born in 1962 when residents there formed the U.P. (Upper Penninsula) Independence Asso- ciation, their aim to give the Upper Peninsula statehood, and lower Michiganders dubbed them Yuppes, which soon became Yoopers. Yoopanese is the dialect of the Yoopers, which is based somewhat on Finnish, both in phrases like “let’s go store” in- stead of “let’s go to the store,” and in the substitution of “da” for “the” or “dat” for “that.” |
