woe is me. Woe, first recorded in about 725, has been called “a truly international exclamation of sorrow.” The world has al- ways been full of woes, including the Latin vae (vae victus, “woe unto the conquered!”), the Welsh gwoe, the Gothic wai, the Armenian vae, and the Old Persian avoi, among many, many others. The still common expression woe is me! is first re- corded in 1205 and is probably much older. |
