词源 | woe-begone. Woe-begone people, those oppressed with mis- fortune, distress, or sorrow, have been so called since before Chaucer’s time. The word is a combination of woe and bigon, “beat,” as is illustrated by the Old English sentence “Me is woe bigon” (“I am beset with woe”). |
