词汇 volleyball
词源
volleyball. When William Morgan, the YMCA director in Holyoke, Massachusetts, invented the game we call volleyball in 1895, for some unknown reason he called the new sport mint- onette, Morgan, a Springfield College student himself, encour- aged young people to play the sport and, as the volleying of the ball seemed the most exciting part of the game, its name was changed to volleyball. But a far better story anyway is playwright Arthur Kopit’s apocryphal origin of the game, noted in Willard Espy’s Thou Improper, Thou Uncommon Noun (1978): “. . . every evening in King Louis XV’s prison compound a court official named Jacques de Vollet supervised eight nude chambermaids as they, four to a side, batted a loaf of sour bread hither and thither across a line draped with their underclothing. The bouncy play of the young ladies greatly agitated the manacled prisoners looking on. When the bread had been beaten into morsels too small to bat, the chambermaids tossed the remnants to the inmates for supper. Hence, logically, volleyball.
