obeah. An old term of African origin for a form of belief in- volving sorcery. According to Harper’s Magazine (March, 1972) “Obeah is a kind of witchcraft, and is practiced by ‘obeah men’ by putting horsehair, fowl’s feet, fish’s bones, coneyskins, and other stuff into a pot, and burying the pot in the ground or near the house of the person against whom the necromancy is to be employed.” |
