od; odic force. Though only an odd term today, od was once supposed to stream from female fingertips, “burning blue.” It was a natural force said to pervade all nature, especially mani- festing itself in persons of sensitive temperament, and the odic force was a basic force underlying many natural activities—in- cluding magnetism and chemical reactions. The word was an arbitrary coinage of German scientist Baron von Reichenbach, who proposed the odic theory in 1850. |
