词汇 | obsidian |
词源 | obsidian. Obsidian is a glasslike rock of volcanic origin formed by the rapid cooling of lava on the earth’s surface. Usually it is a bright, glossy black, but some examples are gray, green, brown, or red, ranging from opaque to translu- cent. Usually sharp-edged, the rock was often used for arrow- heads and other weapons by the ancients. Pliny the Elder tells us in his Natural History that obsidian was named for its dis- coverer Obsius, who first found it in Ethiopia. In early edi- tions of his work Pliny’s obsianus, for the mineral, was mis- printed as obsidianus, this explaining the mysterious “d” in the word. |
