词汇 | oak |
词源 | oak. Oaks, venerated by the Druids, were regarded as sacred to the god of thunder in ancient times because the trees were believed to be more likely to be struck by lightning than any other kind of tree. The origins of the oak’s name are lost in his- tory; the word was first recorded in the sixth century, but it is undoubtedly much older. One oak still standing in England is said to be 1,600 years old. In case you’ve ever wondered, a large oak has about 250,000 leaves, so if you have four on your prop- erty, you have a million leaves to admire and rake up every fall. “Charles’s oak” is a historically famous old oak that grew near Boscobel House in England. When Charles II fled the Parlia- mentary army after the Battle of Worcester on September 3, 1651, he climbed down into the hollow tree and hid there with a colonel of the royal guard until it was safe to proceed; his supporters lowered food and drink to him. If the oak leafs out in spring before the ash tree, it will be a good, abundant year, according to the old proverb: “Oak before ash, in for a splash; Ash before oak, in for a soak.” But if the ash leafs out before the oak, there will be flooding in the summer and a poor fall har- vest. An oak winter is a cold spell in the spring that occurs after small leaves have appeared on the oak trees. |
