dealing from the bottom of the deck; deal me out. Both of these expressions passed into general use from the American poker tables of the early 19th century. Dealing from the bottom of the deck, like a crooked gambler, means to take unfair or ille- gal advantage of someone, while deal me out, meaning “I don’t want to play this hand,” or “I don’t want to participate this time,” or, as Sam Goldwyn reputedly said, “Include me out.” |
