词汇 raccoon
词源
raccoon; raccoon-eyed. An Algonquian Indian dialect word is the basis for raccoon, which dates back to the first settlers in America. Dr. Johnson said of the clever creature: “The rackoon is a New England animal, like a badger, having a tail like a fox, being clothed with a thick and deep furr: it sleeps in the day time in a hollow tree, and goes out a-nights, when the moon shines, to feed on the sea side, where it is hunted by dogs.” Ra- coon-eyed means someone with deep rings under his or her eyes from illness or lack of sleep, the face resembling the “masked” raccoon’s. See coon’s age.
