词汇 | jesus bug |
词源 | Jesus bug; sea strider. While the Earth is host to over 1 mil- lion classified species of insects, only one insect lives in the ocean: Halobates, or the sea strider. Halobates can walk on the waves without getting seasick, but anchors its eggs to albatross or booby feathers. Known also as the Jesus bug because it walks on water, the variegated blue and black inch-long insect is sup- ported by the surface tension of the water, each of its six feet resting in a minute depression as the insect speedily rows itself along, using its stiff-haired middle pair of legs as oars, its front pair for support, and its rear pair for steering. The bugs are at- tracted to light, and solid sheets containing thousands of im- mature specimens are often found off the Galapagos. A single bird’s feather has been found to contain 25,000 Halobates eggs. No one knows what they feed on or where they find shelter to survive storms or tropical downpours, because when their backs get wet, they become waterlogged and sink. |
