Mrs. O’Leary’s cow. Mrs. Patrick O’Leary’s cow has had more abuse heaped upon it than any cow in history, for some- thing it didn’t do. Mrs. O’Leary was supposed to have been milking her cow on the morning of October 8, 1871, when bossie kicked over a kerosene lamp in the barn and started the great Chicago fire that killed 250 people and caused some $300 million in property damage before it was contained. No one knows how the fire really started (perhaps by spontaneous combustion in the O’Leary’s haymow), but in 1924, two years before his death, Chicago newspaper reporter Michael Ahern admitted that he had invented the tale to make his stories about the blaze more colorful.
