Shakespeare contributed this common saying to the language, making it the title of his popu- lar comedy Much Ado About Nothing (1598–9), which used as its chief source a novella by Italian writer Matteo Bandello. There are many equivalents in other languages of this expres- sion, including A great vineyard and few grapes (Portuguese); Much smoke but a small roast (Spanish); and Much bleating, lit- tle wool (German). |
